TONIGHT! Catch a glimpse of SHIELDS on “Our America with Lisa Ling” on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN)
SHIELDS is briefly shown in tonight’s episode of “Our America With Lisa Ling: Children of the System” on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) airing at 10/9c. You may see a glimpse of some of our staff or the meeting room at our ASK/CalWORKs Program site when the episode follows “Monica” to a parenting class.
SHIELDS for Families has been an integral part of improving the child welfare system in Los Angeles County through the design and implementation of an innovative prevention service-delivery model aimed at keeping families together. This model decreased the number of children removed and the length of time spent in out-of-home (foster) care by 50% – saving the County millions of dollars! Recently, this program was cut throughout the County – resulting in a rapid spike in removals, thousands of families without services and a potential loss of 300+ jobs to local agencies that worked to keep children and families OUT of the child welfare system. We were a part of a County-Wide Community Child Welfare Coalition of 50+ agencies that worked closely with the Blue Ribbon Commission on Child Protection which recently submitted to the LA County Board of Supervisors a report of recommendations to reform the LA County Child Welfare System. SHIELDS supports their recommendations and will continue advocating for children and families.
